Setting up a hardware wallet without making the three common mistakes
Ledger or Trezor, bought direct, initialised offline, seed written once on steel. The order matters.
Checklist · 5 steps
- Buy only from the manufacturer's site. Never from a marketplace reseller.
- Generate the seed on the device. Never type a seed you were given.
- Write the 24 words by hand. Never photograph them. Never type them into anything.
- Send a small test amount, then recover the wallet from the seed on a second device before sending the rest.
- Add a passphrase only after you understand that losing it loses the funds.
A hardware wallet keeps your private key on a chip that never touches the internet. That is the whole point, and every mistake people make with them comes from breaking that one rule.
Mistake one: buying from a reseller. Tampered devices with pre-set seeds have been sold on marketplaces since 2017. Buy from Ledger or Trezor directly and check the packaging.
Mistake two: typing the seed phrase into a phone or computer, usually because a fake app or a fake support agent asked for it. No legitimate software ever needs your seed. The device signs transactions; the seed is only for recovery, on a device.
Mistake three: never testing recovery. A seed written wrong is worthless and you find out when it is too late. Recover onto a second device, or wipe and recover the same one, before moving real money.
