What the number means

The index compresses five signals into one figure. Below 25 is extreme fear: volatility is high, volume is falling, people are searching for “bitcoin crash”. Above 75 is extreme greed: momentum is strong, social feeds are loud, and newcomers are arriving. Between 45 and 55 is a market that has not made up its mind.

How traders actually use it

Mostly as a contrarian check. A reading in extreme fear is a prompt to ask whether the selling is about anything real; a reading in extreme greed is a prompt to ask who is left to buy.
