Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said crypto exchanges and custodians must prioritise survival over market competition over the next two years as the industry faces a wave of major platform hacks. In an interview with Indian financial news outlet Moneycontrol, Buterin said recent security attacks have targeted user interfaces and centralised components rather than underlying smart contracts. Wu Blockchain reported details of the interview on 5 November.
Buterin urged digital asset platforms to adopt a defensive security approach to protect their infrastructure. He warned that persistent security breaches could prompt regulators to impose stricter compliance requirements on crypto operators worldwide. His warning follows comments on 4 November from Bybit Chief Executive Officer Ben Zhou, who said exchanges must plan for security breaches rather than relying solely on prevention.
Zhou said building proprietary custody systems is expensive and time-consuming, leaving most projects dependent on third-party providers. Bybit recently replaced its third-party cold wallet storage with an in-house hardware system that requires physical staff to authorise Hardware Security Modules.
On Ethereum's development roadmap, Buterin outlined the core pillars of "Lean Ethereum", which relies on zero-knowledge proofs, artificial intelligence, and formal code verification to secure the network. He also addressed Layer 2 scaling protocols, arguing that developers should create differentiated applications instead of simply copying Ethereum's general transaction scaling features. Buterin said Layer 2 projects ought to focus on high-performance decentralised finance, privacy tools, and enterprise use cases.
