Synthetix recovered 8.4 million SNX tokens on 30 October after the assets were stolen during a security breach at cryptocurrency exchange Binance.
The protocolDAO behind Synthetix said the recovered tokens are now secured in its Safe wallet and will be returned once Binance requests them, according to The Defiant. Meanwhile, US federal agencies including the FBI and the Secret Service joined the investigation into the breach, Decrypt reported. Decrypt also reported that stablecoin issuer Circle froze $823 million in linked assets, while Binance set aside $6.34 billion to cover customer losses.
The recovery comes after a multi-billion dollar breach at Binance that saw issuers move quickly to block stolen funds. Tether froze $971 million in USDT on 29 October following the incident, which Binance founder Changpeng Zhao called a major disaster for the industry, according to earlier reporting by YourKhabri.
Legal experts questioned whether smaller victims of crypto hacks would receive similar asset-freeze protections from major issuers, CoinDesk reported. Investigators and law enforcement officials are continuing to trace the remaining stolen funds.
